Bloom - A story of passion for Therapeutic Recreation
Ever since starting my University degree at Concordia University in Montreal, I knew that I had found my calling. People always told me I was a “people-person” and I could only agree, but I wanted to be more than that. I wanted to help people, be an advocate for those who didn't have a voice, and help people understand that they deserve to be the best version of themselves, regardless of any limitations or conditions they might have.
Having a strong background in the Sports and recreation industry (I started coaching young teenagers in a cross-country ski program at age 16 and completed my NCCP training, followed by levels 1 and 2), Recreational therapy was a perfect combination of everything I was looking for in a job!
Not only did I participate actively in the department’s events and committees, I also had a chance to explore many different areas of practice during my internships. From implementing a “health and well-being program” on the oncology department of the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital in Laval (Quebec), to creating one-on-one physical and cognitive programs for individuals in the transition care unit of the Montreal General Hospital. I also participated in developing new assessment tools and resources for the Montreal Children’s hospital. My final internship took place in a pediatric palliative care center called The Lighthouse, where I completed over 400 hours with the organisation working both one-on-one and in groups practicing recreational therapy. I was offered a full-time position at the center after graduation, and was able to pursue my calling to my great joy.
During this time I was also offered a teaching assistant position as well as research assistance for the department. I also became the eastern Canada representative, as part of the Para-Nordic Skiing development committee with Cross-country Canada. Our focus was to introduce this adapted sport to as many people as possible by creating resources and events (such as learn-to-ski day) for people with physical disabilities across Canada.
Being a military spouse, also means that I have been traveling the country to support my husband in his career. This lifestyle has allowed me to practice my profession and work in different provinces, and with various clienteles for the last 8 years, from long term care facilities and day programs to family resource centers.
After working in the field for almost a decade, I decided to create my own company: Bloom Therapeutic Recreation and Fitness. I wanted to be able to practice my passion no matter where life took us, and have a more balanced lifestyle with our young and growing family!
Whether you are looking to use this service for yourself, a client or a family member, my promise to you is that this passion will be reflected in my services. I value a very holistic and goal-oriented person-centered approach, which you will notice from the moment we meet! Please do not hesitate to contact me for any questions or comments you may have.
